Surely I would take it vpon my shoulder, and bind it as a crowne to me. Job 31:36 (KJV)

and bind it

as a crown to me. Job 31:36 (KJV)

Job 31 is part of a long defence that Job presents in response to his friends’ accusations and arguments. Throughout the book of Job, he is enduring intense suffering and seeking to make sense of his condition. In this chapter he reflects on his integrity and righteousness, declaring his innocence against the charges of wrongdoing.

The imagery in verse 36—taking the accusation upon his shoulder and binding it as a crown—expresses Job’s confidence in his innocence. By likening the charge to a crown he would willingly wear, he shows that he is unafraid of judgment and considers himself blameless before God.

Job’s words highlight the importance of personal responsibility and accountability. He demonstrates a strong sense of integrity by being ready to take responsibility for his actions and to face any consequences, standing in stark contrast to his friends who insist his suffering must stem from hidden sin.

Application of this verse encourages believers to examine their own lives, to be accountable for their choices, and to live with integrity and humility. As followers of Christ we are called to acknowledge our shortcomings, seek forgiveness when we fall short, and trust that true righteousness includes confidence in God’s justice.

Job’s confidence also reflects his trust in God’s ultimate judgment. Throughout the book he expresses a desire to present his case before God and to rely on divine justice. His stance teaches us to trust in God’s wisdom and righteousness, even when faced with adversity or unjust accusations.

In conclusion, Job 31:36 (KJV) showcases Job’s integrity, his readiness to face judgment with honesty, and his trust in God’s justice. It reminds us of the vital need for personal accountability and encourages us to stand firm in truth, trusting that God will vindicate the innocent.
