Revelation 6:16
And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
Revelation 6:16 (KJV)
Context
Revelation 6:16 belongs to the opening of the sixth seal, a dramatic vision of cosmic upheaval preceding the Day of Judgment. A great earthquake shakes the earth, the sun turns black, the moon becomes as blood, and the stars fall, filling humanity with fear. Verse 15 lists those who hide in caves and among the rocks: kings, great men, the rich, commanders, the mighty, and every slave and free person. Their desperate concealment leads directly to the cry in verse 16.
Meaning
In this verse, the terrified inhabitants of the earth call to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb.” This cry reveals extreme terror and the realization that God’s judgment has arrived and they are unprepared. The phrase “him that sitteth on the throne” refers to God the Father, the supreme ruler and judge. The “wrath of the Lamb” is striking: the Lamb, normally a symbol of gentleness and sacrifice, is here the agent of wrath, underscoring the severity of judgment against sin. No earthly refuge can shield anyone from the face of God or the Lamb’s wrath.
Biblical connections
This cry echoes Hosea 10:8, where Israel in judgment calls for mountains to cover them, and Luke 23:30, where Jesus warns of the consternation at His coming. The immediate context in Revelation 6:17 asks, “For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?” highlighting the universal scope and inevitability of judgment.
Application
This passage reminds believers of the severe consequences of rejecting God’s grace and living in rebellion. It underscores the urgency of seeking reconciliation with God before that day arrives. Only through repentance, faith, and obedience to Jesus Christ can one escape the coming wrath and find true refuge in Him.
Reflection
Revelation 6:16 serves as a solemn warning of the seriousness of the Day of Judgment. It calls every person to turn to God, seek His forgiveness, and live in faithful obedience, knowing that He alone provides true deliverance from the impending wrath.
