Revelation 6:16

And said to the mountaines and rockes, Fall on vs, and hide vs from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lambe: Revelation 6:16 (KJV)

Revelation 6:16 is situated at the opening of the sixth seal, a dramatic segment that describes the events leading up to the Day of Judgment. In this portion a great earthquake shakes the earth, the sun turns black as sackcloth, the moon becomes as blood, and the stars of heaven fall to the earth, producing widespread fear and panic among humanity.

Verse 15 records that the kings of the earth, the great men, the rich, the commanders, the mighty, every slave and every free person hide themselves in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. Their desperate concealment sets the stage for the cry recorded in verse 16.

In verse 16 they cry out to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb.” This utterance expresses extreme terror and desperation as the people realize that the time of God’s judgment has arrived and that they are unprepared to face it.

The phrase “him that sitteth on the throne” refers to God the Father, the supreme ruler and judge of the universe. The “wrath of the Lamb” signifies the righteous judgment that Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, will execute upon those who have rejected Him and His salvation.

The passage therefore reminds believers of the severe consequences of rejecting God’s grace and living in rebellion against Him. Those who call for the mountains and rocks to hide them experience the anguish of confronting divine judgment and the urgency of seeking reconciliation before it is too late.

It highlights the importance of recognizing Jesus Christ’s lordship, accepting His sacrificial work for our sins, and finding true refuge and salvation in Him rather than facing the wrath of God. The verse underscores that only through repentance, faith, and obedience can one escape the coming judgment.

Ultimately, Revelation 6:16 serves as a solemn warning of the seriousness of the Day of Judgment and calls every person to turn to God, seek His forgiveness, and live in faithful obedience, knowing that He alone can provide true deliverance from the impending wrath.
