Revelation 7:5

Of the tribe of Juda were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Reuben were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Gad were sealed twelve thousand.

Revelation 7:5 (KJV)

The book of Revelation is a highly symbolic and apocalyptic book that reveals the final events and the ultimate victory of Jesus Christ. In chapter 7, the focus is on the sealing of God’s servants before the outpouring of His judgment on the earth. This verse names the first three tribes in a larger list of all twelve tribes of Israel, the descendants of the twelve sons of Jacob.

The sealing mentioned here refers to God’s protection and marking of His chosen people. In biblical times, seals were used to authenticate or secure important documents or possessions. Similarly, God seals His servants to identify and safeguard them from harm during the impending tribulations. Each tribe has twelve thousand individuals sealed, a number likely symbolic rather than literal. The repetition of twelve indicates completeness and fulfillment, and the sealing of twelve thousand from each tribe represents the totality and fullness of God’s chosen people.

The tribe of Judah was one of the most prominent in Israel. It was the tribe from which King David and King Solomon descended, and it eventually became the tribe associated with the Messianic lineage. Jesus Christ, the Messiah, was born into the tribe of Judah. Judah is listed first, and the name Judah means “praise” (Genesis 29:35), reminding the sealed ones to praise God for His blessings.

Reuben was the firstborn son of Jacob, and Gad was the seventh son. During Israel’s wilderness journey, the tribes of Reuben and Gad (along with half of the tribe of Manasseh) camped on the eastern side of the tabernacle, while Judah camped on the southern side. Their inclusion in the sealing signifies God’s faithfulness to all the tribes of Israel.

The listing of the tribes in Revelation 7:5 echoes the Old Testament genealogies and tribal lists, showing continuity with God’s covenant people. The number 12,000 per tribe, totaling 144,000 (Revelation 7:4), is symbolic of completeness and God’s sovereign selection. This passage emphasizes God’s faithful preservation of His people and the certainty of His plan.

As believers, we can draw encouragement from this verse. It assures us that God is aware of and intimately involved in the preservation of His chosen ones, and it reminds us of His faithfulness to keep His promises and protect His people in times of trouble. While the verse mentions specific tribes and numbers, the primary message is the completeness and faithfulness of God’s chosen people.

God’s sealing is a mark of ownership and care. Just as He sealed the tribes of Israel, He seals His people today through the Holy Spirit, guaranteeing their security and final redemption. This truth calls us to trust in His sovereign plan and to live as those who bear His seal, offering praise to Him who is faithful.
