Genesis 29:35

And she conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, Now will I praise the Lord: therefore she called his name Judah; and left bearing.

Genesis 29:35 (KJV)

Leah was the older daughter of Laban, given to Jacob in marriage through Laban’s deception, while Jacob loved her younger sister Rachel. Leah felt unloved because Jacob favored Rachel, and she hoped that bearing sons would win his affection. With each of her first three sons, she expressed that hope: Reuben, meaning “See, a son”; Simeon, “Hearing”; and Levi, “Attached” or “Joined.”

In this verse, Leah conceives again and bears a fourth son. This time her focus shifts from her husband to the Lord. She declares, “Now will I praise the LORD,” and names the child Judah, which means “praise” or “praised.” The name itself becomes an act of worship. The verse then notes that she “left bearing,” indicating a pause in childbearing.

Judah becomes the ancestor of one of the twelve tribes of Israel, and the Messianic line that leads to Jesus Christ runs through this tribe (Matthew 1:2-3; Hebrews 7:14). Thus, Leah’s praise at Judah’s birth points forward to the ultimate praise of God in the coming of Christ.

Leah’s transformation is evident throughout the passage. Initially she sought Jacob’s love, yet the naming of Judah reveals her emerging confidence that true fulfillment rests in worshiping God. Her example teaches believers to recognize and appreciate God’s blessings, especially when circumstances feel difficult or when human love is lacking. Praising God for His provision cultivates contentment and spiritual growth.

Leah’s declaration “Now will I praise the LORD” models a decision to worship God regardless of one’s situation. The naming of Judah as “praise” shows that our circumstances can be transformed into testimonies of God’s faithfulness. This passage encourages believers to move from focusing on their problems to praising God for His goodness, trusting that He is at work even when human relationships disappoint.
