Revelation 7:5

Posted on 18 May at 11:27

Of the tribe of Iuda were sealed twelue thousand. Of the tribe of Ruben were sealed twelue thousand. Of the tribe of Gad were sealed twelue thousand. Revelation 7:5 (KJV)

Context: The book of Revelation is a highly symbolic and apocalyptic book that reveals the final events and ultimate victory of Jesus Christ. In Chapter 7 the focus is on the sealing of God’s servants before the outpouring of His judgment on the earth.

The Tribes: The verse mentions three specific tribes—Judah, Reuben, and Gad as part of a larger list that includes all twelve tribes of Israel, the descendants of the twelve sons of Jacob. Each tribe had its own identity, role, and territory within the nation of Israel.

The Sealing: The sealing mentioned here refers to God’s protection and marking of His chosen people. In biblical times seals were used to authenticate or secure important documents or possessions. Similarly, God seals His servants to identify and safeguard them from harm during the impending tribulations.

Twelve Thousand: Each tribe mentioned in this verse has twelve thousand individuals sealed from it. It is important to note that this number is likely symbolic rather than literal. The repetition of the number twelve indicates completeness and fulfillment, and the sealing of twelve thousand from each tribe represents the totality and fullness of God’s chosen people.

Judah: The tribe of Judah was one of the most prominent tribes in Israel. It was the tribe from which King David and King Solomon descended, and it eventually became the tribe associated with the Messianic lineage. Jesus Christ, the Messiah, was born into the tribe of Judah.

Reuben and Gad: Reuben was the firstborn son of Jacob, and Gad was the seventh son. During Israel’s wilderness journey the tribes of Reuben and Gad (along with half of the tribe of Manasseh) camped on the eastern side of the tabernacle, while Judah camped on the southern side. Their inclusion in the sealing signifies God’s faithfulness to all the tribes of Israel.

Symbolic Representation: While the specific number of twelve thousand from each tribe may not represent a literal count, it conveys the idea that God has a faithful remnant from every tribe of Israel. It highlights that God’s redemptive plan includes people from various backgrounds, not limited to a particular group.

Application: As believers we can draw encouragement from this verse. It assures us that God is aware of and intimately involved in the preservation of His chosen ones, and it reminds us of His faithfulness to keep His promises and protect His people in times of trouble.

In conclusion, Revelation 7:5 emphasizes the sealing and protection of God’s servants from the twelve tribes of Israel during the end times. While the verse mentions specific tribes and numbers, the primary message is the completeness and faithfulness of God’s chosen people.
