Revelation 13:5

Listen to this article

“And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.”

Context:The book of Revelation is a prophetic and symbolic book written by the apostle John while he was exiled on the island of Patmos. It reveals future events and provides insights into the spiritual battle between good and evil. In chapter 13, John describes a vision of two beasts, commonly referred to as the beast from the sea and the beast from the earth, representing political and religious powers that oppose God and persecute His people.

The “mouth speaking great things and blasphemies”:In Revelation 13:5, we read about the first beast being given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies. This imagery suggests that the beast will arrogantly boast and blaspheme against God. It signifies the power and authority of the beast to spread lies, deceive people, and undermine the truth of God’s Word.

The “forty and two months”:The verse also mentions that power was given to the beast to continue for forty-two months. In biblical symbolism, forty-two months is equivalent to three and a half years. This time period represents a limited duration, indicating that the beast’s authority and ability to persecute God’s people will be temporary. It signifies a time of trial and tribulation for believers, but ultimately, God’s sovereignty and triumph will prevail.

Interpretation:The symbolism in Revelation 13:5 points to a future period of intense persecution and opposition to God and His people. Some interpretations suggest that this verse refers to a specific historical period, while others see it as a symbolic representation of the ongoing spiritual battle throughout history. The “mouth speaking great things and blasphemies” may refer to the arrogant and blasphemous nature of those who oppose God and His truth.

Application:As believers, it is essential to understand that we may face trials and persecution for our faith. The message of Revelation encourages us to stand firm in our commitment to God, even in the face of opposition. It reminds us that the power and authority of those who oppose God are limited, and ultimately, God will bring about justice and deliverance for His people.

In conclusion, Revelation 13:5 presents a symbolic picture of a beast with a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, representing a power that opposes God. The reference to forty-two months signifies a temporary period of authority. This verse serves as a reminder for believers to remain steadfast in their faith, trusting in God’s sovereignty and ultimate victory over evil.
