Revelation 13:6
“And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.”
Context:The book of Revelation is a prophetic book filled with vivid symbolism and apocalyptic language. It was written by the Apostle John while he was exiled on the island of Patmos. Revelation unveils the ultimate victory of God over evil and the consummation of His plan for the world.
Identification of the characters:In Revelation 13, the chapter preceding verse 6, two beasts are introduced. The first beast rises out of the sea and is often referred to as the Antichrist or the beast from the sea. The second beast rises out of the earth and is commonly known as the False Prophet. Verse 6 specifically focuses on the words spoken by the second beast or the False Prophet.
Blasphemy against God:The verse states that the False Prophet opens his mouth in blasphemy against God. Blasphemy refers to speaking irreverently or slanderously about God or His divine attributes. It is an act of disrespect and rebellion against God’s authority and holiness. The False Prophet, under the influence of Satan, actively opposes God and promotes false worship.
Blasphemy against God’s name:The False Prophet not only speaks against God but also blasphemes His name. God’s name represents His character, authority, and reputation. By blaspheming God’s name, the False Prophet is attacking the very essence and nature of God, seeking to undermine His authority and deceive people.
Blasphemy against His tabernacle:The False Prophet also blasphemes God’s tabernacle. In the Old Testament, the tabernacle was the sacred dwelling place of God among His people. In the New Testament, it symbolizes the presence of God in the person of Jesus Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in believers. By blaspheming the tabernacle, the False Prophet is attacking the divine presence of God among His people.
Blasphemy against those in heaven:Lastly, the False Prophet blasphemes those who dwell in heaven. This could refer to both the angels and the saints who are in the presence of God. The False Prophet aims to undermine the authority and holiness of these heavenly beings and mislead people into rejecting their significance.
Overall, Revelation 13:6 depicts the activities of the False Prophet during the end times, where he actively speaks against God, blasphemes His name and tabernacle, and attacks the authority of heavenly beings. It highlights the spiritual warfare and deception that will occur during this period, but ultimately, it also reveals the ultimate victory of God over evil.
