Revelation 16:10

Listen to this article

“And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness, and they gnawed their tongues for pain.”

Context:The book of Revelation, written by the apostle John, is a prophetic book that reveals the future events leading up to the second coming of Jesus Christ. It contains visions and symbolic language that depict the final judgments and the establishment of God’s kingdom. Revelation 16 is part of the section commonly known as the “seven bowls” or “seven vials” of God’s wrath poured out on the earth.

The Fifth Bowl:In this verse, we see the pouring out of the fifth bowl of God’s wrath by the fifth angel. Each bowl represents a specific judgment upon the earth. The previous verses describe the judgments of painful sores on those who have the mark of the beast (Revelation 16:2), the turning of the sea into blood (Revelation 16:3), the rivers and springs becoming blood (Revelation 16:4-7), and scorching heat upon the people (Revelation 16:8-9).

Darkness and Pain:When the fifth angel pours out his bowl, it results in the kingdom of the beast being filled with darkness. This darkness could be both literal and symbolic. It may signify spiritual darkness, the absence of God’s light and truth, or it could also refer to physical darkness, similar to the ninth plague in Exodus when the land of Egypt was covered in darkness (Exodus 10:21-23). The darkness could also be a consequence of the previous judgments that have affected the environment.

Gnawing of Tongues:The verse continues to say that the people in the kingdom of the beast “gnawed their tongues for pain.” This gnawing of tongues could be understood as a metaphorical expression of intense suffering or torment. It emphasizes the agony experienced by those who are under the judgment of God.

Symbolism:Throughout the book of Revelation, we encounter various symbols that need to be interpreted carefully. The “beast” mentioned in this verse refers to a powerful and oppressive political and religious system that opposes God and deceives people. The darkness and pain represent the consequences and judgments that result from the beast’s rule.

Spiritual Lessons:Revelation 16:10 serves as a reminder of God’s justice and judgment. It reveals that those who oppose God and align themselves with evil will face the consequences of their choices. The darkness and pain experienced by the kingdom of the beast demonstrate the severity of God’s judgment on those who reject His truth and refuse to repent.

Overall, Revelation 16:10 portrays a scene of darkness and intense suffering as a result of God’s judgment upon the kingdom of the beast. It reminds believers of the importance of aligning themselves with God’s truth and righteousness, as well as the urgency to share the Gospel so that others may turn to God and escape the judgment to come.
