Revelation 16:10

And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,

Revelation 16:10 (KJV)

The book of Revelation, written by the apostle John, is a prophetic book that reveals future events leading up to the second coming of Jesus Christ. It contains visions and symbolic language depicting the final judgments and the establishment of God’s kingdom. Revelation 16 is part of the section commonly known as the “seven bowls” or “seven vials” of God’s wrath poured out on the earth.

The fifth bowl is one of a series of judgments. The previous bowls brought painful sores on those with the mark of the beast (Revelation 16:2), turned the sea to blood (Revelation 16:3), turned rivers and springs to blood (Revelation 16:4-7), and scorched people with heat (Revelation 16:8-9). The fifth bowl strikes the very center of the beast’s power.

The “seat” or throne of the beast represents the center of its authority and rule. This judgment is a direct blow aimed at the beast’s power, though it does not yet secure its final destruction, which is reserved for the seventh bowl. The darkness that fills the beast’s kingdom may be both literal and symbolic. It recalls the ninth plague in Egypt, when darkness covered the land (Exodus 10:21-23), and it signifies spiritual darkness—the absence of God’s light and truth.

The people in the beast’s kingdom “gnawed their tongues for pain.” This vivid expression describes intense agony and inward anguish. They suffer torment, yet they are unable to express or execute revenge. The immediate context in Revelation 16:11 shows that despite these pains and sores, they blasphemed the God of heaven and did not repent of their deeds.

The beast is the same being described in Revelation 13:1, a powerful and oppressive political and religious system that opposes God and deceives people. The darkness here parallels the plague of darkness in Exodus, connecting this judgment to God’s historical acts of deliverance and judgment. The people affected are the worshippers of the beast and his image, who experience the consequences of their allegiance.

Revelation 16:10 reminds us of God’s justice and judgment. Those who oppose God and align themselves with evil will face the consequences of their choices. The darkness and pain experienced by the kingdom of the beast demonstrate the severity of God’s judgment on those who reject His truth and refuse to repent. This judgment also shows that even severe judgment does not automatically produce repentance in those who are hardened against Him.

For believers, this verse underscores the urgency of sharing the Gospel so that others may turn to God and escape the judgment to come. It calls us to align ourselves with God’s truth and righteousness, and to take comfort in His sovereignty over the forces of evil.

The scene of darkness and intense suffering in Revelation 16:10 is a sobering reminder of the reality of God’s wrath. Yet it also points to the hope that believers have in Christ, who delivers us from the darkness and grants us light and life. As we reflect on this judgment, we are invited to examine our own hearts and to remain faithful to God, who alone is worthy of our worship and trust.
