Revelation 16:19

“And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.”

Context:The book of Revelation is the final book of the New Testament, written by the apostle John. It is a highly symbolic and prophetic book that unveils the future events leading up to the return of Jesus Christ and the establishment of His kingdom. Revelation 16 describes the pouring out of the seven bowls of God’s wrath upon the earth.

The Great City:In this verse, “the great city” refers to Babylon. In the book of Revelation, Babylon symbolizes a system of worldly power, influence, and rebellion against God. It represents the world’s opposition to God’s kingdom and the forces that work against His people.

Divided into Three Parts:The division of the great city into three parts suggests a complete and total collapse. This could signify the disintegration of the power and influence of the system represented by Babylon. It implies that Babylon’s dominance and unity will crumble, resulting in its downfall.

Cities of the Nations Falling:The phrase “the cities of the nations fell” indicates a widespread collapse and destruction of the earthly kingdoms and powers aligned with Babylon. It signifies the judgment of God upon the systems and structures of the world that oppose His kingdom and persecute His people.

The Cup of God’s Wrath:The mention of “the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath” is a symbolic representation of God’s judgment and punishment upon Babylon. This imagery draws from the Old Testament, where the cup often symbolizes divine wrath and the consequences of disobedience.

God’s Remembrance of Babylon:The phrase “and great Babylon came in remembrance before God” signifies that God has not forgotten the sins and rebellious acts of Babylon. Despite its seeming prosperity and temporary success, Babylon’s day of reckoning will come when God pours out His wrath upon it.
