Revelation 17:1
And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:
Revelation 17:1 (KJV)
Context
The book of Revelation is a highly symbolic and apocalyptic work written by the Apostle John. It reveals the final events leading up to the second coming of Jesus Christ and the establishment of God’s eternal kingdom. Revelation 17 is part of the series of visions John receives, providing further details about the judgment upon Babylon, a symbolic representation of the corrupt world system that opposes God’s kingdom.
Meaning
One of the seven angels who had the seven vials, or bowls, approaches John. These angels were introduced earlier as they poured out the judgments of God’s wrath upon the earth (Revelation 16:1). The angel now speaks to John, offering to show him the judgment of the “great whore” or “great prostitute” that sits upon many waters. The angel’s invitation, “Come hither,” signals a divine revelation of coming judgment.
The “great whore” represents a spiritual entity or system that seduces and deceives people away from God. Throughout Revelation, Babylon is depicted as a symbol of this corrupt and idolatrous world system. The term “whore” or “prostitute” is symbolic of unfaithfulness and spiritual harlotry, implying the seduction of people into false worship or allegiance.
The phrase “sitteth upon many waters” emphasizes the global influence of the great whore. In biblical symbolism, waters often represent people, nations, and multitudes (Revelation 17:15). Therefore, the great whore’s dominion extends over a large portion of the world.
Biblical connections
The use of “vials” connects this vision to the previous series of judgments, showing continuity in God’s unfolding plan of wrath and redemption. The judgment is presented as certain and divine, shown by an angel of God.
Application
The angel invites John to come and witness the judgment that will be executed upon the great whore. This demonstrates God’s justice and righteousness in dealing with evil and those who oppose His kingdom. Throughout Revelation, there is a consistent message that God’s judgment will come upon the wicked, while offering salvation and deliverance to those who belong to Him.
Reflection
This verse calls believers to recognize the reality of spiritual deception and the certainty of God’s judgment. It encourages faithfulness to God alone, resisting the allure of any system that leads away from Him.
