Revelation 17:3

Posted on 18 May at 14:20
Listen to this article

“So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.”

Context of Revelation 17:The book of Revelation is a highly symbolic and apocalyptic book written by the apostle John. It reveals the revelation of Jesus Christ and provides insights into the end times and the ultimate triumph of God over evil. In Revelation 17, John receives a vision where he is shown the judgment of the great prostitute and the beast she rides upon.

Symbolism of the woman:The woman described in Revelation 17 represents a great prostitute or a false religious system. In biblical symbolism, a woman often represents a religious entity or a spiritual community. Here, the woman symbolizes a corrupt religious system that seduces and deceives people away from true worship of God. The scarlet color indicates luxury and opulence, but also suggests the shedding of innocent blood. The fact that she sits on the beast indicates her control or influence over the political powers of the world.

Symbolism of the scarlet colored beast:The scarlet colored beast is the same beast mentioned earlier in Revelation 13:1-10. It represents a powerful political entity or kingdom aligned with the false religious system. The seven heads and ten horns signify great power and authority. The names of blasphemy suggest that this political system is opposed to God and promotes rebellion against His divine authority.

Significance of the wilderness:John is carried away in the spirit into the wilderness to witness this vision. The wilderness often represents a place of isolation, testing, and preparation. In this context, it may signify that the revelation John receives is meant to prepare and equip believers to withstand the spiritual challenges and deceptions of the end times.

  • The vision of the woman and the beast serves as a warning against false religious systems that lead people astray. It reminds believers to be discerning and to stay rooted in the truth of God’s Word.
  • The symbolism of the scarlet color and the names of blasphemy reminds us of the presence of evil and the opposition to God’s kingdom in the world. It encourages believers to remain faithful and to resist the temptations and deceptions of worldly powers.
  • The fact that John is carried away in the spirit into the wilderness indicates the need for spiritual discernment and reliance on the Holy Spirit to understand and navigate the complexities of the end times. It calls believers to be prayerful and watchful, seeking God’s guidance and wisdom in all things.
  • Ultimately, the vision of Revelation 17 points to the triumph of God over all forms of evil and false religion. It reminds believers that, in the end, God’s justice and righteousness will prevail, and He will bring judgment upon all who oppose Him.
