Blessed and holy
is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. Revelation 20:6 (KJV)
The book of Revelation is a highly symbolic and apocalyptic work written by the Apostle John while he was exiled on the island of Patmos. It presents a series of visions that reveal future events, including the end‑times conflict and the ultimate victory of God over evil.
The First Resurrection is the focus of this verse. It refers to the physical resurrection of believers at Christ’s return, as described in Revelation 20:4‑6: “But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.” This event is distinct from the spiritual rebirth that occurs when a person trusts in Jesus.
The phrase “the second death” denotes eternal separation from God, the final consequence for those whose names are not found in the Book of Life (Rev 20:14). Those who have part in the first resurrection are exempt from this second death; through their faith in Christ they have received eternal life and are reconciled to God.
Those who partake in the first resurrection are also described as “priests of God and of Christ.” The imagery draws on the Old‑Testament priesthood, where priests mediated between God and His people. In the New Testament believers are called a “royal priesthood” (1 Pet 2:9) and have direct access to the High Priest, Christ (Heb 4:14‑16).
Finally, the verse declares that these blessed and holy ones shall reign with Christ for a thousand years. This period, often called the millennial reign, is when Christ’s kingdom is established on earth. While the exact nature and timing of the millennium are subjects of theological debate, the essential promise is that those who share in the first resurrection will share in Christ’s authority and reign with Him for the thousand‑year period.
