Revelation 20:7

Posted on 18 May at 14:19
Listen to this article

“And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison.”

Context:The book of Revelation is a highly symbolic and prophetic book that reveals the events leading up to the return of Jesus Christ and the establishment of His kingdom. In Revelation 20, the chapter focuses on the millennial reign of Christ, also known as the thousand-year reign, and the final defeat of Satan.

The thousand years:The phrase “thousand years” refers to a period of time during which Christ reigns on the earth with His saints (Revelation 20:4-6). This period follows the defeat of Satan and the binding of him in the Abyss. It signifies a time of peace and righteousness when the influence of evil is restrained and the world experiences the fullness of God’s kingdom.

Satan’s imprisonment:Prior to the millennial reign, an angel binds Satan and casts him into the Abyss, which serves as a temporary prison (Revelation 20:1-3). During this time, Satan is unable to deceive the nations and hinder the spread of the gospel.

Satan’s release:After the thousand years have expired, Satan is released from his prison (Revelation 20:7). The purpose of his release is not explicitly stated in the verse, but the subsequent verses shed light on the reason.

Final testing and judgment:Revelation 20:8-10 describes how Satan, upon his release, deceives the nations once again and gathers them for battle against God’s people. This battle, known as the battle of Gog and Magog, ends with the ultimate defeat of Satan and his followers. It signifies the final testing and judgment before the eternal state.

Symbolism and interpretation:The events described in Revelation, including the release of Satan, are highly symbolic and can be interpreted in different ways. One interpretation is that Satan’s release represents a final opportunity for those who have lived during the millennial reign to choose between righteousness and rebellion. It reveals that even after experiencing the peace and righteousness of Christ’s reign, some people may still reject Him.

Application:Revelation 20:7 serves as a reminder that although Satan will be bound and his influence limited during the millennial reign of Christ, he will still have a brief time of freedom to deceive before his ultimate defeat. This emphasizes the importance of remaining vigilant and steadfast in our faith, knowing that spiritual battles will continue until the end.

It’s important to note that the book of Revelation contains many symbolic and complex passages, and various interpretations exist among scholars and theologians. It is recommended to study the book as a whole and consider different perspectives while seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit for a comprehensive understanding.
