Listen to this article

“Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal.”

Revelation 21:11: is part of a larger passage that describes the vision of the new Jerusalem, which is the holy city that comes down from heaven. In this verse, the focus is on the appearance and radiance of the city.

The Glory of God: The verse begins by saying that the new Jerusalem has the glory of God. The glory of God is the manifest presence and splendor of God Himself. It signifies His majesty, power, and divine attributes. The presence of God’s glory in the new Jerusalem emphasizes the magnificence and significance of this city.

The Light of the City: The verse continues by describing the light of the city. It says that her light was like a stone most precious, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal. This description emphasizes the brilliance and purity of the light. Jasper is a translucent gemstone that can vary in color but is often depicted as being clear or shining. The clear, crystal‑like light suggests a radiant and luminous quality that is beyond earthly comprehension.

The description of the light in this verse serves to highlight the glory and splendor of the new Jerusalem. It portrays the city as a place filled with divine brilliance and beauty, reflecting the presence of God Himself.

Symbolically, light often represents truth, purity, and righteousness in the Bible. In the context of the new Jerusalem, the light symbolizes the perfect righteousness and holiness of God’s dwelling place. It signifies a place where darkness and evil have no place and where the presence of God illuminates everything.

This verse also echoes an earlier passage in Revelation 4:3, where the jasper stone is mentioned as being one of the elements that reflect the glory of God’s throne. The consistent use of the jasper stone imagery reinforces the idea that the new Jerusalem is a place intimately connected to God’s presence and glory.

In conclusion, Revelation 21:11 provides a vivid description of the new Jerusalem, emphasizing its radiant beauty and the presence of God’s glory. The verse invites believers to imagine a future dwelling place that surpasses earthly limits, filled with divine brilliance and holiness. It serves as a reminder of the hope and promise that await those who are faithful to God.
