Revelation 21:11

Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal;

Revelation 21:11 (KJV)

Revelation 21:11 appears within John’s vision of the new Jerusalem, the holy city descending from heaven. The verse focuses on the city’s appearance and radiance, introducing the glory of God as the source of its light.

The verse begins by declaring that the new Jerusalem “has the glory of God.” This glory is the manifest presence and splendor of God Himself—His majesty, power, and divine attributes. The city’s significance is tied directly to this divine presence.

The city’s light is compared to a most precious stone, specifically a jasper stone, clear as crystal. Jasper is a translucent gemstone that can vary in color but is often depicted as clear or shining. The crystal-like clarity suggests a radiant, luminous quality beyond earthly comprehension.

This light is not self-generated; it reflects the divine presence. Revelation 21:23 later clarifies that the glory of God lightens the city, and the Lamb is its lamp. Thus, the brilliance of the new Jerusalem is a direct manifestation of God’s own glory.

Symbolically, light represents truth, purity, and righteousness in Scripture. In the new Jerusalem, this light signifies the perfect holiness of God’s dwelling place—a realm where darkness and evil have no place, and God’s presence illuminates everything.

This verse invites believers to anticipate a future dwelling that surpasses earthly limits, filled with divine brilliance and holiness. It serves as a reminder of the hope and promise awaiting those who are faithful to God.

The radiant city assures us that God’s presence will one day be fully visible and accessible. Until then, we live in the light of that promise, allowing its hope to shape our faithfulness and longing for His eternal kingdom.
