Revelation 21:12
And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:
Revelation 21:12 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the vision the apostle John received on the island of Patmos. In that vision, John saw the New Jerusalem, the holy city, descending from heaven. The city is described as having a great and high wall with twelve gates, an angel at each gate, and the names of the twelve tribes of Israel written on the gates.
Meaning
The imagery in this verse is rich in symbolism. The wall represents security, protection, and distinction. It emphasizes the separation between the holy city and the outside world, symbolizing the purity and sanctity of the New Jerusalem. The twelve gates signify access and entrance into the city. In ancient times, city gates were places of gathering, judgment, and decision-making. The twelve gates of the New Jerusalem indicate that access to the holy city is open to all twelve tribes of Israel, representing the entirety of God’s chosen people. Each gate is guarded by an angel. Angels are heavenly beings who serve as messengers and ministers of God. In this context, the angels may represent the divine guardians of the city, ensuring that only those who are worthy and chosen by God can enter. The names written on the gates are those of the twelve tribes of Israel. This symbolizes the continuity between the Old Testament and the New Testament, highlighting the fulfillment of God’s promises to the people of Israel. It also signifies the unity and inclusion of all God’s chosen people.
Biblical connections
The number twelve appears throughout Scripture as a symbol of completeness and divine order, reflecting the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles. The names of the tribes on the gates connect the New Jerusalem to God’s covenant people, showing that the promises made to Israel find their fulfillment in Christ and are extended to all who belong to Him.
Application
This verse paints a picture of a magnificent and secure city with multiple entrances guarded by angels. It emphasizes the significance of the twelve tribes of Israel and their role in God’s redemptive plan. The vision conveys the message that God’s promises are being fulfilled, and His people will ultimately find eternal security and fellowship in His holy presence. The wall’s height and strength assure believers of God’s ultimate protection, while the gates remind them that entry is by God’s grace. The angels at the gates serve as a reminder of God’s active care for His people, and the names of the tribes signify that the people of God are honored and remembered.
Reflection
Revelation 21:12 encourages believers to have hope and assurance in the fulfillment of God’s promises, His faithfulness to His chosen people, and the ultimate victory of His kingdom. It invites us to reflect on the security and holiness of the eternal city and to live in anticipation of that future reality, persevering in faith because our eternal home is secure.
