Revelation 21:9
“And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife.”
Context and Background:The book of Revelation, written by the apostle John, is a prophetic vision that provides a glimpse into the future and the ultimate victory of Christ over evil. In this particular passage, John is describing a vision he had while exiled on the island of Patmos. He sees an angel who has the seven last plagues and offers to show him the bride, the Lamb’s wife.
The Symbolism:In biblical language, the “bride” symbolises the Church, and the “Lamb” refers to Jesus Christ. The imagery of the bride and groom is used throughout the New Testament to depict the intimate relationship between Christ and His followers. Here, it represents the culmination of God’s redemptive plan and the ultimate union between Christ and His Church.
The Significance:Revelation 21:9 highlights the future, glorious state of the Church. The angel’s invitation to John indicates that he is about to witness a profound revelation concerning the Church’s destiny. The angel, possessing the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, represents a connection to previous judgments and the finality of God’s plan.
The Heavenly Vision:Continuing from verse 10 onward, John describes the heavenly vision he witnessed after the angel’s invitation. He sees the holy city, New Jerusalem, descending from heaven, adorned as a bride for her husband. This city symbolises the perfected and glorified Church, dwelling in God’s presence. The imagery used to describe its beauty and radiance conveys the purity, holiness, and eternal nature of this heavenly dwelling.
Application: Revelation 21:9 encourages believers to look forward to the future fulfilment of God’s promises. It reminds us that the Church, as the bride of Christ, will ultimately share in the eternal glory of God’s presence. It gives us hope and assurance that, despite the trials and tribulations we may face in this present world, there is a glorious future awaiting all who are in Christ Jesus.
