Revelation 21:12

Posted on 18 May at 14:19
Listen to this article

“And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel.”

Revelation 21:12: is part of the vision that the apostle John received on the island of Patmos. In this vision, John saw the New Jerusalem, the holy city, descending from heaven. The city was described as having a great and high wall with twelve gates, and at each gate stood an angel. These gates were inscribed with the names of the twelve tribes of Israel.

The imagery in this verse is rich in symbolism. Let’s explore some key aspects and their meaning:

  • The Wall:The wall mentioned in the verse represents security, protection, and distinction. It emphasises the separation between the holy city and the outside world. It symbolizes the purity and sanctity of the New Jerusalem.
  • The Twelve Gates:The twelve gates signify access and entrance into the city. In ancient times, city gates were places of gathering, judgment, and decision‑making. The twelve gates of the New Jerusalem indicate that access to the holy city is open to all twelve tribes of Israel, representing the entirety of God’s chosen people.
  • The Twelve Angels:Each gate is guarded by an angel. Angels are heavenly beings that serve as messengers and ministers of God. In this context, the angels may represent the divine guardians of the city, ensuring that only those who are worthy and chosen by God can enter.
  • The Names of the Twelve Tribes:The names written on the gates are those of the twelve tribes of Israel. This symbolises the continuity between the Old Testament and the New Testament, highlighting the fulfilment of God’s promises to the people of Israel. It also signifies the unity and inclusion of all God’s chosen people.

This verse paints a picture of a magnificent and secure city, the New Jerusalem, with multiple entrances guarded by angels. It emphasises the significance of the twelve tribes of Israel and their role in God’s redemptive plan. The vision conveys the message that God’s promises are being fulfilled, and His people will ultimately find eternal security and fellowship in His holy presence.

Overall, Revelation 21:12 encourages believers to have hope and assurance in the fulfilment of God’s promises, His faithfulness to His chosen people, and the ultimate victory of His kingdom.
