Revelation 22:12

Posted on 18 May at 14:19
Listen to this article

“And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.”

Context:The book of Revelation is the final book in the New Testament and contains a series of visions given to the Apostle John while he was exiled on the island of Patmos. Revelation reveals the ultimate triumph of God and His plan for the future. Chapter 22 describes the vision of the New Jerusalem and the final words of Jesus.

The Imminent Return of Jesus:The verse begins with Jesus declaring, “And, behold, I come quickly.” This statement emphasises the imminence of Christ’s return. The word “quickly” indicates that when the events leading up to Christ’s return are set in motion, they will unfold rapidly. It serves as a reminder for believers to be ready and watchful for His coming.

The Promise of Reward:Jesus continues by saying, “and my reward is with me.” This statement highlights the promise of rewards that Jesus will bring with Him when He returns. The rewards will be given to every person according to their work. This suggests that believers’ actions and deeds in this life have eternal significance and will be acknowledged by God. It emphasises the importance of living a life of faithfulness, obedience, and service to God.

Judgment according to Works:Jesus further states, “to give every man according as his work shall be.” This phrase underscores the principle of divine judgment based on an individual’s deeds or works. It implies that the final judgment will not be arbitrary or capricious but rather just and fair. God will evaluate each person’s actions and intentions, rewarding them accordingly. This concept aligns with other passages in the Bible that emphasise the importance of faith and works as evidence of genuine faith (e.g., James 2:14-26).

Application for Believers:Revelation 22:12 encourages believers to live with a sense of urgency, knowing that Jesus’ return could happen at any moment. It reminds us that our actions in this life matter and have eternal consequences. As followers of Christ, we should strive to live faithfully and obediently, bearing good fruit in our lives. While our salvation is a gift of God’s grace received through faith, our works demonstrate the authenticity of our faith and will be rewarded by God.

Revelation 22:12 serves as a reminder of Christ’s imminent return and the promise of rewards that will be given to believers based on their works. It encourages believers to live with a sense of urgency, faithfully serving God and living in anticipation of the glorious return of Jesus Christ.
