Revelation 22:13

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

Context

This verse stands in the closing chapter of the book of Revelation, the final book of the Bible. Revelation records a series of visions and prophecies given to the Apostle John while he was exiled on the island of Patmos. Here, Jesus Christ Himself speaks, declaring His eternal nature and supreme authority.

Meaning

Jesus calls Himself the “Alpha and Omega”, using the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet to signify that He is the beginning and the end of all things. This phrase emphasizes His divinity, His eternal existence, and His sovereignty over creation. He is the source from which all things originate and the goal toward which all things move.

The three titles in this verse reinforce one another. As the “beginning and the end”, Jesus is present at creation and will be present at the final consummation of history. As the “first and the last”, He existed before all things and will remain after all things have passed away. Together, these titles affirm that He is the eternal, unchanging God who holds all things together.

This declaration also points to Jesus’ role in salvation. He originated the plan of redemption, He sustains it through history, and He will bring it to its intended fulfillment. He formed the world, and He will wind up its affairs. In the beginning, the continuance, and the end, He will be recognized as Lord.

Biblical connections

This verse echoes the same self-designation Jesus used earlier in Revelation, where He is called the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last (Revelation 1:8). These passages together confirm His eternal nature and His unchanging faithfulness.

Application

Because Jesus is the Alpha and Omega, He is not merely a historical figure or a moral teacher. He is the eternal God who holds all things together. This truth calls us to recognize His authority in our lives, trust His plan for our future, and find hope and security in His unchanging nature. He is the source of life, the sustainer of the universe, and the ultimate judge of all humanity.

As we reflect on this verse, we can be encouraged that our Lord is eternal and that He has the power to guide us through every season of life. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and He will bring all things to their intended purpose according to His perfect will. May we find comfort in knowing that the One who began the work of redemption will also complete it.
