Revelation 22:14
“Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.”
Context of Revelation:The Book of Revelation is a highly symbolic and prophetic book that reveals the future events concerning the return of Jesus Christ and the establishment of His kingdom. It contains messages to seven churches in Asia Minor (Revelation 2-3), visions of heavenly worship and God’s throne (Revelation 4-5), the unfolding of the end times (Revelation 6-20), and the description of the new heaven and new earth (Revelation 21-22).
“Blessed are they that do his commandments”:The word “blessed” refers to being divinely favored and experiencing true happiness. In this verse, it speaks of the blessedness of those who do God’s commandments. Throughout the Bible, obedience to God’s commandments is emphasized as a way to honour and please God. Jesus Himself said, “If you love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). Obedience is an expression of love and faithfulness to God.
“That they may have right to the tree of life”:The tree of life is a significant symbol that originated in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:9). It represents eternal life and communion with God. In Revelation, the tree of life reappears in the new heaven and new earth, bearing its fruits and offering healing to the nations (Revelation 22:2). By doing God’s commandments, believers are granted the right to partake of the tree of life, signifying their eternal fellowship with God.
“And may enter in through the gates into the city”:The “city” referred to here is the New Jerusalem, described in Revelation 21:10-27. It is a magnificent and glorious city that represents the dwelling place of God and His redeemed people. Only those who do God’s commandments are granted entry into this city. This highlights the importance of a transformed life through obedience to God’s Word.
