In Judges 18, the tribe of Dan seeks new territory to settle in because they had not yet acquired their allotted inheritance. Five men from the tribe of Dan are sent to spy out the land, and they come across the house of Micah, where they recognize an idol and a priest. They inquire about their journey and receive guidance from the priest, who tells them that their journey will be successful. The five men proceed to the city of Laish, which is peaceful and unsuspecting.
Upon their return to their fellow Danites, they gather a group of 600 armed men and head toward Laish to conquer it. Along the way, they pass by Micah’s house again and take the carved image and the priest, offering him a better position. Micah’s attempts to confront them are unsuccessful, and the Danites proceed to Laish, where they kill its inhabitants and take possession of the city. They rename it Dan after their ancestor.
This chapter highlights the idolatry and lawlessness prevalent during the time of the judges, as the Danites seize Micah’s religious articles and establish their own sanctuary. It also depicts the vulnerability of Laish and the ease with which it falls to the Danites’ attack. The events in this chapter serve as an example of the moral and spiritual decline of the Israelites during this period.
