Judges 18:12
And they went up, and pitched in Kirjath–jearim, in Judah: wherefore they called that place Mahaneh–dan unto this day: behold, it is behind Kirjath–jearim.
Judges 18:12 (KJV)
Context
The Book of Judges describes Israel’s history between Joshua’s death and the monarchy. In this time, the people often turned from God, suffered oppression, repented, and received deliverance. Judges 18 tells how the tribe of Dan, unable to fully occupy its allotted land, sent out spies to find a new territory. Six hundred armed men later set out from Zorah and Eshtaol, and this verse records their first stop.
Meaning
The Danites went up and camped at Kirjath-jearim, a town in Judah. Its name means “City of Forests.” It lay on the border between Judah and Benjamin and later became known for housing the Ark of the Covenant. The place where they camped they called Mahaneh-dan, meaning “Camp of Dan.” The phrase “behind Kirjath-jearim” likely means west of the town. The name remained in use “unto this day,” showing that this event left a lasting mark on the land.
Biblical connections
Kirjath-jearim appears in Joshua 15:9 and 15:60 as part of Judah’s boundary, confirming its location. The Danites’ journey eventually led them to capture Laish, which they renamed Dan. Their movement reflects a larger problem in Judges: the tribes often acted by their own judgment rather than fully trusting God’s promises. The naming of Mahaneh-dan memorialized their presence, but it also showed their restless search for a home.
Application
This verse reminds readers that God sees every step of a journey, even a temporary camp. The Danites named the place to remember what happened there. Believers can also mark places where God guided them, not to glorify human effort, but to recall His faithfulness. Yet the Danites’ story warns against making decisions without seeking the Lord. Their search, though humanly understandable, was part of a pattern of doing what seemed right in their own eyes.
Reflection
When facing uncertainty, it is wise to pause and remember how God has led in the past. A name or a place can serve as a quiet reminder of His care. At the same time, every step should be offered to God in prayer, so that our plans align with His will.
