Joshua 15:15

And he went up thence to the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjath–sepher.

Joshua 15:15 (KJV)

Joshua 15:15 appears in the record of the land allotted to the tribe of Judah. The one who “went up” is Caleb, who had already received Hebron as his inheritance. He now moves against Debir, a city in the hill country of Judah, not far from Hebron. The verse notes that Debir was formerly called Kirjath-sepher, meaning “city of books” or “city of letters.” This suggests it may have been a place of learning or a Canaanite stronghold with a library.

The name “Debir” means “oracle” or “sanctuary,” pointing to a place of divine communication. The renaming from Kirjath-sepher to Debir likely happened after Israel’s conquest, marking a new identity under God’s people. Such renamings were common in biblical times and often carried symbolic weight, reflecting a change from Canaanite control to Israelite possession. This transformation shows that God can turn a place of human learning or power into a sanctuary for His purposes.

This conquest connects to Joshua 10:38-39, where Joshua and Israel had previously captured Debir and its king. That earlier victory shows the continuity of God’s faithfulness. The allotment of Judah’s territory, including Debir, fulfills God’s promise to give the land to Abraham’s descendants. The city’s transformation from a Canaanite stronghold to part of Israel’s inheritance illustrates God’s covenant faithfulness.

This verse reminds believers that God keeps His promises, even when the path involves conflict and change. Just as Debir was renamed to reflect a new beginning, God can transform places and lives that were once far from Him. The detailed record of land allotment encourages trust in God’s careful provision for His people. When we face battles or transitions, we can remember that God is at work, bringing about His purposes.

Consider how God has been faithful in your own journey. The naming of places and the recording of boundaries show that God values order and remembrance. As Caleb pressed on to claim what God had promised, believers are called to persevere in faith, trusting that God’s promises are sure. Let this verse encourage you to move forward in obedience, knowing that God goes before you.
