Judges 18:11

And there went from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men appointed with weapons of war.

Judges 18:11 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the Book of Judges, which tells of Israel’s history after Joshua’s leadership. During this time, the people often fell into disobedience, then oppression, then repentance, and then deliverance. The tribe of Dan had received land in the Promised Land, but strong enemies such as the Philistines kept them from taking full control. So the Danites looked for another place to settle.

Earlier in Judges 18, five spies from Zorah and Eshtaol had explored the land and found the city of Laish, peaceful and rich. Their report encouraged the tribe to act. Now six hundred armed men from those same towns set out, ready for war.

The phrase “family of the Danites” likely means the whole clan or tribe, not one small household. These six hundred men were “appointed with weapons of war,” meaning they were fully equipped and prepared for battle. Their departure was not commanded by God. It came from their own desire for a better inheritance.

This journey led the Danites to Micah’s house, where they took his idols and his priest, and then to Laish, which they captured and renamed Dan. The whole account shows a people acting on their own judgment, even adopting idolatry. It stands in contrast to earlier times when Israel sought God’s guidance before major moves.

This verse warns against self-reliance. The Danites had a real problem, but they solved it without asking God. Believers today can face similar temptations, making important decisions based on what seems best rather than seeking God’s will. Preparation and courage are good, but they must follow obedience to God.

Consider your own plans and decisions. Are they shaped by faith and prayer, or by personal ambition? The Danites’ story reminds us that even God’s people can drift when they ignore His commands. True security comes not from weapons or strategy, but from walking in God’s ways.
