Acts 10:29

Therefore came I unto you without gainsaying, as soon as I was sent for: I ask therefore for what intent ye have sent for me?

Acts 10:29 (KJV)

Acts 10 records the encounter between Cornelius, a devout Gentile centurion, and Peter, one of the twelve apostles. Cornelius prayed regularly and gave alms, and in a vision an angel instructed him to send men to Joppa to call for Peter. While the messengers were on their way, Peter was on a rooftop in Joppa and received a divine vision that prepared him for the meeting. As the messengers arrived, the Holy Spirit prompted Peter to go with them, leading directly to the dialogue recorded in Acts 10:29.

Peter’s response exemplifies immediate obedience. He came “without gainsaying, as soon as I was sent for,” showing no hesitation or objection to the divine direction. The phrase “without gainsaying” means without objection, reluctance, or excuse. Peter’s consent was immediate, even though he did not set out with the messengers until the next day. He acted promptly, recognizing that he was being sent for a specific purpose.

Yet Peter also sought clarity. He asked, “I ask therefore for what intent ye have sent for me?” This question was not a sign of ignorance or reluctance. The messengers had already mentioned the main purpose (Acts 10:22), but Peter desired a more particular statement from Cornelius himself, wanting to hear the full account of the considerations that led him to send for Peter. This question opened the door for Cornelius to recount his vision and for Peter to preach the Gospel.

Like Peter, we should be ready to respond to God’s call with prompt obedience, trusting that He has a purpose for us. We must also ask for clarity, seeking God’s guidance and the intent behind our assignments. Finally, we are called to break down cultural and religious prejudices, embracing the universal love of God and sharing it with every person we encounter. May this passage inspire us to be obedient, discerning, and inclusive in our Christian walk.
