Context
The Book of Acts records the early history of the Christian church and the spread of the Gospel message. On the island of Cyprus, they are summoned by Sergius Paulus, the deputy (KJV) or proconsul, the Roman governor of a senatorial province, who wanted to hear the word of God.
Paul and Barnabas encountered Elymas, a Jewish sorcerer who opposed them and tried to turn the deputy away from the faith. Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, confronted Elymas, temporarily blinding him. This miraculous event caught the attention of the deputy.
Meaning
The deputy witnessed the power of God demonstrated through Paul’s actions. He was astonished at the doctrine, or teaching, of the Lord that Paul proclaimed. The word “doctrine” refers to the message of salvation and the teachings of Jesus Christ. The deputy’s belief was in the Lord Jesus Christ, whom Paul preached. His astonishment was at the doctrine of the Lord, both at its content and its power. The doctrine of faith contains many astonishing things, including the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Christ, and the way of salvation through him.
The event was a visible, undeniable miracle: Elymas was struck blind immediately, demonstrating that the hand of God was manifestly in it and that there was no deceit or magic art involved. It was a plain, certain, and visible fact. The deputy’s faith appears to be genuine and connected with eternal life, providing evidence that the gospel was not confined to the poor and obscure but could reach those in high positions of authority.
Application
Recognizing God’s power: Just like the deputy, we should be open to recognizing and acknowledging the power of God in our lives. Miracles and demonstrations of God’s power can serve as reminders of His presence and the truth of His Word.
