Acts 15:17

Context: Acts 15:17 is part of a speech delivered by James, the brother of Jesus, during the Council of Jerusalem.

The council was convened to address the issue of whether Gentile believers needed to be circumcised and follow Jewish customs in order to be saved. James, along with the apostles and elders, gathered to discuss and reach a resolution on this matter.

“In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old: That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen, which are called by my name, saith the Lord that doeth this.”

James quotes these verses to affirm that God had already foretold the inclusion of the Gentiles in His plan of salvation.

He uses the phrase “the residue of men” to refer to all people, including both Jews and Gentiles.
