Acts 18:13

“13 Saying, This fellow persuadeth men to worship God contrary to the law.”

Context:To understand Acts 18:13 better, let’s first look at its context. In Acts 18, the apostle Paul arrives in Corinth during his second missionary journey. He stays with Aquila and Priscilla, who were tentmakers like him. Paul engages in ministry, reasoning in the synagogue every Sabbath and preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Opposition in Corinth:While Paul was preaching and teaching, he faced opposition from the Jews in Corinth. They were unhappy with his message and accused him of persuading people to worship God contrary to the law. This accusation reflects the tension between the early Christians and the Jewish religious authorities.

Conflict with Jewish Law:The Jews accused Paul of going against the Jewish law. They believed that the Law of Moses, with its rituals, sacrifices, and customs, was the only legitimate way to worship and serve God. Paul’s message of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ and his teachings on grace and the Holy Spirit challenged their understanding of the law.

Paul’s Message:The accusation made against Paul reveals that he was preaching a message that deviated from the strict observance of the Jewish law. Paul taught that salvation was not attained through works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ. He emphasized the importance of God’s grace and the new covenant established through Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Fulfillment of Prophecy:The opposition faced by Paul in Corinth was not unexpected. Jesus had warned His disciples that they would face resistance, even persecution, for spreading the Gospel. In Matthew 10:16-20, Jesus told His disciples that they would be brought before rulers and authorities because of Him.

Response to Opposition:Paul’s response to the accusation is not recorded in Acts 18:13, but elsewhere in his writings, he often defended his teachings and clarified his position. He explained the relationship between faith and the law, emphasizing that salvation comes through faith in Christ alone. Throughout his ministry, Paul encountered opposition but remained steadfast in proclaiming the gospel.
