Acts 19:17

Listen to this article

“And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.”

Context:The book of Acts, written by Luke, records the early history of the Christian church and the spread of the Gospel after Jesus’ ascension. In Acts 19, the apostle Paul is on his third missionary journey and arrives in the city of Ephesus, which was a major commercial centre in Asia Minor.

Previous events:Before verse 17, Paul had been preaching and performing miracles in Ephesus, leading to many people turning to the Lord and the Word of God spreading widely. Additionally, some Jewish exorcists tried to use the name of Jesus to cast out evil spirits, but they were unsuccessful and faced a public humiliation (Acts 19:13-16).

Verse breakdown:– “And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus”: The news of the failed exorcism attempt and the power of the name of Jesus became widely known among both the Jewish and Greek populations in Ephesus. Ephesus had a diverse religious landscape, with many different belief systems present.

– “Fear fell on them all”: The people in Ephesus were struck with fear and awe due to witnessing the power of God and the name of Jesus. The failed exorcism attempt demonstrated that true spiritual authority and power resided in Jesus alone.

– “And the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified”: The people’s fear and awe caused them to exalt and honor the name of the Lord Jesus. They recognised the authority and superiority of Jesus over other religious practices or attempts to manipulate spiritual powers.

Lessons and Applications:

  • The power of Jesus’ name:This verse highlights the authority and power that reside in the name of Jesus. It is a reminder that we, as believers, have access to the name of Jesus and can call upon it in times of need, knowing that He is able to bring deliverance and victory.
  • Fear and awe of God:Witnessing the work of God can lead to a healthy fear and reverence for His power and authority. As we encounter God’s power and see His work in our lives and the lives of others, it should deepen our awe and respect for Him.
  • The spread of the Gospel:The news of the failed exorcism attempt became an opportunity for the Gospel to spread further. It’s a reminder that God can use both successful and unsuccessful events to draw people’s attention to Himself and open doors for sharing the message of salvation.

Acts 19:17 demonstrates the impact of Paul’s ministry in Ephesus, leading to a heightened recognition of the power and authority of Jesus’ name. It encourages believers to rely on the name of Jesus and acknowledge His supremacy in all things.
