Acts 19:2
He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
Acts 19:2 (KJV)
Context
The book of Acts, written by Luke, records the early history of the Christian church. Acts 19 recounts Paul’s visit to Ephesus during his third missionary journey. There he encounters a group of disciples who were followers of John the Baptist.
Meaning
Paul’s question, “Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed?” addresses the believers’ experience of the Holy Spirit. He wanted to know if they had received the Spirit, who is given to all believers as a sign of God’s presence and empowerment. The disciples’ response, “We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost,” reveals their lack of knowledge and understanding concerning the Spirit. They had not received the Holy Spirit nor been taught about His role in the life of a believer.
Biblical connections
This passage highlights the importance of the Holy Spirit in the believer’s life. Throughout the New Testament, the Holy Spirit is depicted as the third person of the Trinity, co-equal with God the Father and God the Son. The Holy Spirit is the promised gift that Jesus spoke about before His ascension. The Spirit convicts, regenerates, indwells, empowers, and guides believers. Paul’s question assumes that true believers have received the Holy Spirit, but it distinguishes between the ordinary regenerating work of the Spirit, given to all believers, and the extraordinary gifts of the Spirit, which may be given separately. The disciples’ response indicates they were unaware of the Spirit’s person and work, despite being familiar with the Old Testament and John’s baptism. In the following verses, Acts 19:3-6, Paul clarifies their baptism, and they are then baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus, after which the Holy Ghost comes upon them. This underscores the connection between faith, baptism, and the reception of the Holy Spirit.
Application
Acts 19:2 encourages believers to seek a personal and experiential relationship with the Holy Spirit. As followers of Jesus, we should desire to receive the Holy Spirit and allow Him to work in our lives. This involves learning about the Holy Spirit through studying the Scriptures and seeking Him through prayer and worship. The Holy Spirit is still active and available to believers today. Just as in the early church, believers can receive the Holy Spirit through faith in Jesus Christ. It is essential for believers to seek a fresh infilling and empowerment of the Holy Spirit continually.
Reflection
This verse serves as a reminder that belief in Christ is foundational, but believers should also experience the Spirit’s presence and power. It cautions against incomplete understanding of the faith, encouraging believers to seek full knowledge of the Holy Spirit’s role. The Holy Spirit is not merely an abstract concept but a personal and active presence of God in the life of a believer.
