Moreouer, ye see & heare, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath perswaded and turned away much people, saying, that they bee no gods, which are made with hands. Acts 19:26 (KJV)

Acts 19 records the events of the Apostle Paul’s ministry in the great city of Ephesus, a major urban center in Asia Minor. While there, Paul proclaimed the Gospel with boldness, performed miracles, and taught that true worship belongs to the living God, not to crafted images.

Ephesus was famed for its magnificent temple to the goddess Artemis, one of the ancient world’s seven wonders. The city’s economy thrived on the manufacture and sale of silver shrines and other idols representing Artemis, providing livelihood for a large body of craftsmen.

The verse in question is spoken by Demetrius, a silversmith, who raises a grievance on behalf of his fellow artisans. He points out that Paul’s preaching is not confined to Ephesus alone but is spreading throughout the whole province of Asia, persuading many people to abandon the worship of idols.

Paul’s impact is evident in the way he “persuaded and turned away much people,” leading them to recognize that the gods fashioned by human hands are not gods at all. This declaration struck at the heart of the Ephesian belief system and threatened the economic foundation of those who produced the idols.

The power of the Gospel is displayed in the transformation of hearts and minds. Paul taught that salvation and genuine worship are found in Jesus Christ alone, not in any crafted image. As a result, many individuals embraced Christianity and left their former practices of idol worship.

The reaction of Demetrius illustrates the opposition faced by Paul and the early church. Concerned that a decline in idol worship would ruin his trade, he incited a public outcry that escalated into a riot in Ephesus. This episode shows how deeply entrenched economic interests and long‑held religious convictions can provoke fierce resistance when challenged by the Gospel.

Through Paul’s teaching, the people came to understand that the true God is the Creator of the universe, incapable of being represented by any human‑made statue or image. This truth confronted the prevailing idolatry of the time and pointed believers toward a personal relationship with the one true God.

Overall, Acts 19:26 captures the far‑reaching influence of Paul’s ministry, the transformative power of the Gospel, the inevitable opposition it encounters, and the essential need to recognize the true nature of God. It serves as a reminder that the proclamation of Christ can bring radical change, even amid strong resistance, leading people to a genuine understanding of God’s nature.
