Listen to this article

“For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you.”

Context:This verse is a part of Peter’s sermon, which he delivered after healing a man who had been lame from birth at the gate called Beautiful in Jerusalem. In his sermon, Peter addresses the astonished crowd and explains the significance of the miracle they had witnessed.

Here, Peter quotes from the Old Testament, referring to Moses’ prophecy in Deuteronomy 18:15. Let’s take a closer look at this prophecy to gain a deeper understanding.

Moses’ Prophecy:In Deuteronomy 18:15, Moses spoke to the Israelites about a future prophet whom God would raise up from among their brethren. This prophet would be like Moses himself and would have a special role in leading and instructing the people.

Fulfillment in Jesus:Peter identifies Jesus as the fulfillment of Moses’ prophecy. He emphasizes that Jesus is the prophet whom Moses spoke about, and the people should listen to Him. This declaration implies that Jesus holds a position of authority and should be heeded.

Similarities to Moses:Peter highlights that Jesus is like Moses in various ways. Both Moses and Jesus were chosen by God for a specific purpose. They both acted as mediators between God and the people. Additionally, Moses led the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt, while Jesus brings deliverance from the slavery of sin.

Obedience to the Prophet:Peter emphasizes that the people should listen to Jesus in all matters. Just as the Israelites were commanded to obey the words of Moses, the people are now instructed to heed the teachings and commands of Jesus. This underscores the authority and importance of Jesus’ message.

By quoting this prophecy, Peter establishes the authority and significance of Jesus as the promised prophet. He calls the people to repentance and faith in Jesus as the Messiah and Savior. This passage highlights Jesus’ role as the ultimate authority and mediator between God and humanity.
