Acts 7:30
And when fourtie yeeres were expired, there appeared to him in the wildernes of mount Sina, an Angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush. Acts 7:30 (KJV)
Acts 7:30 is part of Stephen’s defense before the Sanhedrin, the Jewish ruling council. In his speech he recounts the story of Moses encountering the burning bush on Mount Sinai, using it to illustrate God’s work among His people.
The phrase “forty years were expired” refers to the period Moses spent in the wilderness of Midian after fleeing Egypt. Having killed an Egyptian who was mistreating an Israelite, Moses escaped to save his life and became a shepherd for his father‑in‑law Jethro.
In that wilderness the angel of the Lord appeared to Moses in a flame of fire within a bush that burned but was not consumed. The striking sight caused Moses to turn aside and give his full attention to the divine revelation.
This encounter marked the beginning of Moses’ divine calling. From the burning bush God spoke, revealing His name as “I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14) and commissioning Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egyptian bondage. The event demonstrates God’s powerful presence and confirms Moses’ mission.
The flame of fire symbolizes God’s holiness, power, purification, and guidance. The bush that burned without being consumed serves as a metaphor for God’s enduring presence—able to sustain and protect His people even amid adversity.
Lessons for us include:
First, God can reveal Himself in unexpected ways and at unexpected times. Moses was simply tending his flock when God chose to appear, reminding us to stay open and attentive to His leading.
Second, God’s presence can transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. An ordinary bush became a divine sign; likewise, when God fills our lives, even mundane circumstances can be imbued with purpose and significance.
Third, God’s presence empowers us for His mission. Just as Moses received the commission to deliver Israel, we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to fulfill the calling God has placed on each of our lives.
Acts 7:30 therefore calls believers to seek God’s presence, remain attentive to His guidance, and be ready to participate in the extraordinary work He desires to accomplish through us.
