Acts 8:14
Context:Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: Acts 8:14 (KJV)
This verse signifies an important event in the early Church’s expansion. It highlights the apostles’ response to the news that the people of Samaria had received the word of God through Philip’s preaching. Upon hearing this, the apostles in Jerusalem took proactive steps by sending two prominent apostles, Peter and John, to Samaria. This act demonstrates the interconnectedness and unity of the early Christian community.
The arrival of Peter and John carried significance beyond their presence. Verse 15 goes on to say: “Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost.”
Peter and John’s visit was not only to confirm the authenticity of the work in Samaria but also to pray for the new believers to receive the Holy Spirit. Though the Samaritans had received the gospel and been baptized, the Holy Spirit had not yet fallen upon them. This highlights an important distinction between water baptism and the subsequent baptism in the Holy Spirit, which often occurred through the laying on of hands by the apostles.
In Acts 8:16-17, we read: “(For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.”
This passage emphasizes that receiving the Holy Spirit was a distinct experience from water baptism. The laying on of hands by the apostles facilitated the reception of the Holy Spirit by the believers in Samaria.
The events in Acts 8:14 remind us of the importance of the early Church’s apostolic authority and the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of believers. The apostles played a vital role in confirming and establishing new converts, ensuring that they received the Holy Spirit.
