Acts 8:6

Listen to this article

“And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.”

1. Context: The book of Acts, written by Luke, is an account of the early Christian church and its expansion after the ascension of Jesus Christ. Acts 8 describes the spread of the gospel beyond Jerusalem, particularly through the ministry of Philip the Evangelist.

2. Philip’s Preaching: Acts 8:5-6 sets the stage by stating that Philip went to a city in Samaria and preached Christ to the people. Philip’s message likely included the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ, his death, resurrection, and the forgiveness of sins.

3. Unity of the People: The phrase “the people with one accord” highlights the unity and agreement among the listeners. The Samaritans, who had a historically strained relationship with the Jews, put aside their differences and collectively paid attention to Philip’s words. This unity was significant as it demonstrates the power of the Gospel to bring people together, breaking down barriers and divisions.

4. Paying Heed: The people were attentive and receptive to Philip’s message. They actively listened and took to heart the teachings and testimonies of Philip concerning Jesus Christ. Their openness and willingness to consider the truth of the Gospel are essential for genuine spiritual transformation.

5. Miracles: The people were not only influenced by Philip’s words but were also impacted by the miracles he performed. Miracles have often served as signs and confirmations of God’s presence and power, validating the message being proclaimed. The miracles performed by Philip helped to authenticate his ministry and drew the attention of the people, leading them to listen more intently to his preaching.

6. Application:

  • a. Unity in the Church: The unity displayed by the Samaritans serves as an example for believers today. As Christians, we should strive for unity in our local churches and broader Christian community, putting aside our differences and focusing on our shared faith in Jesus Christ.
  • b. Attentiveness to God’s Word: The people’s attentive listening emphasizes the importance of engaging with the Word of God. As we study and hear the Scriptures, we should do so with a receptive heart, eager to learn, understand, and apply its teachings in our lives.
  • c. The Role of Miracles: Miracles can play a significant role in the proclamation of the Gospel. While miracles are not the sole foundation of faith, they can serve as catalysts for drawing attention and confirming the truth of God’s Word. We should be open to the supernatural work of God and recognize His power at work in our lives and ministries.
