Amos 3:6

Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the Lord hath not done it?

Amos 3:6 (KJV)

Amos, a shepherd from Tekoa, was called by God to prophesy against the Northern Kingdom of Israel during the reign of King Jeroboam II. The people had turned from God to idolatry and oppression of the poor, and Amos delivered a message of judgment and warning. This verse is part of a larger passage in which Amos argues that God reveals His plans to His prophets and that judgment is certain.

The verse uses two parallel images: a trumpet blown in a city and evil in a city. The trumpet here is not the silver trumpet for gathering to worship or the jubilee trumpet of liberty, but the alarm of war or danger, blown by watchmen on the walls. The expected response is fear. Similarly, the Hebrew word for “evil” (ra’ah) can mean calamity, disaster, or misfortune. Amos is asserting that whenever such evil or calamity occurs in a city, it is ultimately under the sovereignty and permission of God. This is not a statement that God is the author of moral evil, but that He is sovereign over all events, including judgments and calamities.

The rhetorical questions emphasize cause and effect: just as a trumpet alarm naturally produces fear, so a divinely sent calamity is a sign of God’s active judgment. The New Testament affirms that God is sovereign over all things, and this verse is consistent with that truth.

Amos 3:6 serves as a reminder of God’s sovereignty and His involvement in the affairs of humanity. It challenges us to reflect on our own lives and communities, prompting us to consider whether we are heeding the warnings or “trumpet calls” that God sends our way, and whether we are responding with fear, repentance, and a renewed commitment to righteousness. This verse encourages believers to trust in God’s sovereignty even in the midst of difficult circumstances, reminding us that God’s judgments and purposes are ultimately just, and that He is working out His plans for the redemption and restoration of His people.

Overall, Amos 3:6 highlights the relationship between God’s sovereignty, the response of the people to warnings, and the divine role in both blessings and judgments. It encourages us to seek God, heed His warnings, and trust in His ultimate plan for our lives.
