Amos 3:7

Posted on 18 May at 14:54
Listen to this article

“Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.”

Historical Context:The book of Amos was written by the prophet Amos during the 8th century B.C. It was a time of great prosperity in the northern kingdom of Israel, but also a time of moral and spiritual decay. Amos was sent by God to deliver a message of judgment against the nation due to their sins.

  • Understanding the Verse:

In Amos 3:7, God reveals an important principle about His relationship with His people. It emphasizes that God, before taking any significant action, reveals His plans and purposes to His prophets. This verse highlights God’s faithfulness in communicating His intentions to those who serve Him.

God’s Sovereignty:The verse begins with the phrase, "Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing." This highlights God’s sovereignty and authority over all things. God is in control, and He can choose to act or withhold His actions according to His divine will. This statement reminds us that God’s plans and actions are purposeful and deliberate.

Revelation to His Servants:The verse further states that God reveals His secrets or plans to His servants, the prophets. Throughout the Bible, God chose various prophets to communicate His messages, warnings, and future events to His people. Prophets acted as intermediaries, relaying God’s word to the people. They were chosen vessels through whom God revealed His will.

Divine Communication:God’s choice to communicate with His prophets demonstrates His desire to have a relationship with His people. He wants to make His plans known and give them an opportunity to respond and align themselves with His purposes. God’s communication with the prophets was a demonstration of His grace and mercy, even in times of impending judgment.

Application:

  • Amos 3:7 reminds us of the importance of seeking God’s guidance and revelation through His Word. Although we may not be prophets in the same sense as those in the Old Testament, we have access to the entire written Word of God, which contains His revealed will and plan for humanity.

As believers, we should seek to understand God’s Word, spend time in prayer, and listen to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. By doing so, we can align ourselves with God’s purposes and live in obedience to His will.

Additionally, this verse reminds us of God’s faithfulness. Just as He revealed His plans to the prophets in the past, we can trust that God will continue to guide and direct His people today. He is faithful to reveal His will as we seek Him with a sincere heart.

In conclusion, Amos 3:7 emphasizes God’s sovereignty, His desire for communication with His people, and the faithfulness of God to reveal His plans to those who serve Him. It encourages us to seek God’s guidance and align ourselves with His will as we study His Word and listen to His voice.
