Amos 5:14

Listen to this article

“Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the Lord, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.”

Historical Context:Amos was a prophet who delivered God’s messages to the northern kingdom of Israel during the reign of Jeroboam II in the 8th century BCE. During this time, Israel had fallen into a state of moral decay, idolatry, and social injustice. Amos was sent by God to warn the people of the impending judgment if they did not repent and turn back to Him.

  • Understanding the Verse:
  • “Seek good, and not evil”:The verse begins with an exhortation from God to the people of Israel. It calls for a deliberate pursuit of righteousness and justice rather than indulging in wickedness and wrongdoing. God desires His people to actively choose and pursue what is good in their lives, their actions, and their relationships with others.
  • “That ye may live”:The phrase “that ye may live” implies that by seeking good and turning away from evil, the people will experience the fullness of life that God intends for them. It encompasses both physical and spiritual life, as obedience to God’s commandments leads to blessings and a flourishing existence.
  • “And so the Lord, the God of hosts, shall be with you”:This verse highlights the promise of God’s presence. When the people of Israel align their lives with goodness and righteousness, God assures them that He will be with them. The phrase “the Lord, the God of hosts” emphasizes God’s sovereignty, power, and authority over all creation.
  • “As ye have spoken”:The verse concludes by referencing the people’s previous statements. It suggests that they had acknowledged the importance of God’s presence and had expressed a desire for Him to be with them. By seeking good and living in righteousness, they would experience the fulfillment of their own words and have a genuine relationship with God.

Application:

  • Pursue goodness:The verse encourages us to actively seek and pursue what is good, right, and just in our lives. It calls for a conscious effort to align our thoughts, actions, and attitudes with God’s standards and principles. This involves living a life characterized by love, kindness, integrity, and compassion towards others.
  • Reject evil:We are also urged to turn away from evil, sin, and wrongdoing. This includes avoiding dishonesty, injustice, immorality, and any actions or attitudes that harm others or dishonor God. By consciously choosing righteousness over wickedness, we demonstrate our commitment to God and His ways.
  • Experience God’s presence:Just as God promised to be with the people of Israel when they sought good, the same assurance is extended to us. When we align our lives with God’s will and pursue righteousness, we can experience His presence, guidance, and blessings in our lives. This includes a deepening relationship with Him, experiencing His peace, and finding strength in His presence.
  • Sincere words and actions:The reference to the people’s previous statements highlights the importance of aligning our words with our actions. It reminds us to speak truthfully and sincerely, expressing our desire for God’s presence, and then living in a manner that reflects that commitment. Our actions should align with our faith and the principles we profess.

Overall, Amos 5:14 calls us to actively seek goodness, reject evil, and live in righteousness. By doing so, we can experience the fullness of life that God intends for us and enjoy a meaningful relationship with Him.
