“Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.”

Certainly! Let’s delve into a Bible study on Amos 5:15, using the King James Version (KJV) translation:Certainly! Let’s delve into a Bible study on Amos 5:15, using the King James Version (KJV) translation:

The book of Amos was written by the prophet Amos during the reign of Jeroboam II, around 760-750 BC. Amos was a shepherd from Tekoa who was called by God to deliver a message of judgment against the Northern Kingdom of Israel for its social injustices, moral decay, and religious hypocrisy.

Amos 5:15 is part of a larger section in which Amos addresses the Israelites, urging them to seek the Lord, turn from their wicked ways, and pursue justice. He confronts their false religious practices and emphasizes the importance of genuine righteousness.

a. Hatred of Evil and Love of Good: Amos exhorts the people to hate evil and love good. This implies a call to discernment and moral integrity. It emphasizes that followers of God should actively oppose wickedness and embrace righteousness.

b. Establishing Judgment: The phrase “establish judgment in the gate” refers to the restoration of justice within the city gates. In ancient times, the city gate was the place where legal matters and important decisions were made. Amos calls for a reestablishment of righteous judgment and fair treatment in society.

c. God’s Graciousness: The verse ends with a glimmer of hope, as Amos suggests that if the people heed his call and embrace righteousness, the Lord God of hosts might show grace and mercy to the remnant of Joseph. This highlights God’s desire to extend His mercy even amidst impending judgment.
