Amos 7:7

Listen to this article

“Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.”

Context:The book of Amos is one of the prophetic books in the Old Testament. Amos was a shepherd from Tekoa who was called by God to deliver a message of judgment to the northern kingdom of Israel. The book primarily addresses social injustice, religious hypocrisy, and the impending judgment of God upon Israel for their sins.

The Vision:In this verse, Amos describes a vision given to him by God. He sees the Lord standing on a wall made by a plumbline, holding a plumbline in His hand. The plumbline is a tool used by builders to ensure that a wall or structure is perfectly vertical.

Symbolism of the Wall:The wall in this vision represents the nation of Israel. Just as a wall provides protection and security for a city, God’s covenant relationship with Israel was meant to be a safeguard for the nation. However, the people had turned away from God, engaging in idolatry and committing social injustices.

Symbolism of the Plumbline:The plumbline symbolizes God’s standard of righteousness and justice. By holding a plumbline, God signifies that He is going to measure Israel against His perfect standard. This implies that the people of Israel have deviated from God’s moral law and are about to face His judgment.

The Message:The vision of the plumbline serves as a warning to Israel. God, as the ultimate Judge, is examining their actions and finding them lacking. The people had built their lives and society upon injustice and idolatry, rather than upon God’s righteousness and truth. Therefore, judgment was imminent.

Application:Amos 7:7 reminds us of the importance of aligning our lives with God’s standards. God’s plumbline represents His unchanging moral principles that define what is right and just. As believers, we are called to live according to His truth and pursue righteousness in our personal lives and in society.

  • God’s Mercy and Warning:Although this vision highlights the impending judgment upon Israel, it’s essential to recognize that God’s purpose is not solely to punish but to call His people to repentance. Throughout the book of Amos, we see glimpses of God’s mercy, as He provides opportunities for repentance and restoration.

In conclusion, Amos 7:7 conveys a powerful message of God’s impending judgment upon Israel for their unrighteousness. It serves as a reminder to us today to examine our lives and ensure that we align ourselves with God’s standards of righteousness and justice. Furthermore, it reminds us of God’s mercy and His desire for His people to repent and turn back to Him.
