Amos 7:8

“And the LORD said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them anymore.”

Historical Context:Amos was a prophet who lived during the reign of Jeroboam II in the northern kingdom of Israel. He was called by God to deliver a message of judgment against the sins of Israel, particularly their social injustice and religious corruption.

In this verse, God speaks to Amos through a vision. God asks Amos what he sees, and Amos replies that he sees a plumbline. A plumbline is a tool used by builders to ensure that a wall or structure is perfectly vertical or straight.

Symbolism of the Plumbline:The plumbline symbolizes God’s standard of righteousness and justice. Just as a plumbline is used to measure the straightness of a wall, God is using the plumbline as a metaphor for measuring the moral and spiritual integrity of His people, Israel. It represents God’s expectations for His people to live in accordance with His laws and commandments.

Divine Judgment:God declares that He will set a plumbline in the midst of His people Israel. This statement signifies that God is going to assess the people of Israel against His standard of righteousness. If they fail to measure up to His expectations, divine judgment will follow.

God’s Final Warning:When God says, “I will not again pass by them anymore,” it indicates that the people of Israel have reached a point of no return. They have persistently ignored God’s warnings and continued in their sinful ways, and now judgment is imminent. God’s patience has come to an end, and He will no longer overlook their transgressions.
