Amos 9:1

Listen to this article

I saw the Lord standing vpon the altar, and he said, Smite the lintell of the doore, that the posts may shake: and cut them in the head all of them, and I will slay the last of them with the sword: hee that fleeth of them, shall not flee away, and he that escapeth of them, shall not be deliuered. Amos 9:1 (KJV)

Amos was a prophet in the Old Testament who delivered God’s messages to the Israelites during a period of great prosperity yet deep moral and spiritual decline. His ministry repeatedly confronted Israel’s social injustice, idolatry, and complacency, warning that divine judgment would follow unchecked sin. Chapter 9 contains the final message of Amos, revealing both impending judgment on Israel and a promise of future restoration.

The vision described in this verse begins with the prophet seeing the Lord standing upon the altar. The altar, normally the focal point of worship and sacrifice, becomes the stage for a solemn pronouncement of judgment. By placing Himself on the altar, the Lord underscores His sovereign authority over the worship of Israel and signals that the forthcoming declaration concerns the very foundation of the nation’s religious life.

God then issues a striking command: “Smite the lintel, that the posts may shake: and cut them in the head, all of them.” Though the agent of the command is not identified, the language conveys a decisive act of destruction. The lintel and the supporting posts symbolize the structural integrity of the nation; their shattering represents the collapse of Israel’s social and religious order under divine wrath.

The declaration continues, “I will slay the last of them with the sword.” This emphasizes that the judgment will be total, extending from the collapse of the nation’s institutions to the extermination of its people. The vivid imagery of cutting heads and shaking posts portrays a comprehensive divine retribution that leaves no part of the corrupt system untouched.

Finally, God stresses the inescapability of this judgment: “He that fleeth of them shall not flee away, and he that escapeth of them shall not be delivered.” Even those who attempt to flee or hide will find no refuge, underscoring the certainty that divine justice will reach every corner of the nation. The passage thus serves as a stark warning that no human effort can thwart the righteous judgment of the Almighty.
