Now know I, that the Lord saueth his Anointed: he wil heare him from his holy heauen, with the sauing strength of his right hand. Psalms 20:6 (KJV)

Psalm 20 is a prayer for victory and deliverance in times of trouble. It is attributed to King David and expresses his trust in God’s help and protection. The psalm opens with a petition for the Lord to answer and bless the psalmist’s requests (verses 1‑5). Verse 6 highlights the psalmist’s confidence that God will save his anointed one and that God will hear him from His holy heaven.

The Lord saves His anointed: In this verse “the LORD” refers to Yahweh, the covenant God of Israel. The term “anointed” carries special significance; in the Old Testament kings, priests, and prophets were anointed with oil as a sign of being chosen and set apart for a specific role. The primary reference is to David, who was anointed by Samuel to become king, but the language can also apply more broadly to anyone devoted to God and seeking His favour.

God hears from His holy heaven: The psalmist affirms that God not only sees and hears prayers but also responds from His holy dwelling place in heaven. This underscores God’s transcendence and sovereign rule over all creation. It reassures the believer that prayers are not in vain, because the Almighty who reigns from heaven is attentive to the cries of the faithful.

The saving strength of His right hand: The psalmist acknowledges that God’s salvation and deliverance flow from His mighty power. Biblical imagery associates the right hand with authority, power, and victory. By emphasizing the “right hand,” the psalmist points to the divine strength that is ready to rescue and deliver the anointed one.

The verse also speaks of God fulfilling the desire of the heart. This adds a personal dimension: the Lord’s hearing and saving power not only brings external deliverance but also aligns with the inner longings of the believer. The passage therefore invites confidence in God’s protective hand, assurance that He hears our prayers from heaven, and hope that He will bring to fruition the sincere desires placed within our hearts.
