Psalms 20:5

We will rejoice in thy salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners: the Lord fulfil all thy petitions.

Psalms 20:5 (KJV)

Psalm 20 is a prayer for the king and the people before battle. The people speak together, asking God to protect their king and give him victory. This verse is their joyful answer of trust, spoken even before the battle is won.

“We will rejoice in thy salvation” means the people celebrate the deliverance God gives. In the Bible, salvation means rescue and redemption. God is the source of help, and His people can be confident in His saving power.

“In the name of our God we will set up our banners” shows public loyalty. Banners were signs that gathered soldiers and showed which side they served. Raising them in God’s name declares openly that the people belong to Him and trust in His protection.

The last part, “the Lord fulfil all thy petitions,” is a prayer for the king. Petitions are requests made to God. The people ask that every honest prayer of their leader be answered. This completes the picture: gratitude for past rescue, public faith, and hope for future help.

Some readers see a deeper meaning in this verse. The salvation of the Messiah, including His resurrection and His place at God’s right hand, is the greatest cause for joy. Christ’s victory gives His people reason to rejoice and to pray with confidence.

Believers today can rejoice in God’s salvation, which is fully shown in Christ. They can also declare their faith openly, like raising a banner, and bring their requests to God, trusting that He hears and answers.

This verse encourages a full life of worship: joy for what God has done, a clear witness to others, and honest prayer for what is still needed. God is faithful to His people in every situation.
