Colossians 1:12

Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:

Colossians 1:12 (KJV)

Paul wrote Colossians to the church at Colossae, and this verse sits within his opening prayer of thanksgiving. He rejoices over the Colossians’ faith and love, and he prays that they will be filled with the knowledge of God’s will. In that setting, he calls them to give thanks to the Father for what God has already done.

The verse begins with a clear command: give thanks to the Father. Gratitude is not optional for the believer; it is a fitting response to God’s goodness. Paul directs our thanksgiving specifically to God the Father, who is the source of every spiritual blessing.

The phrase “which hath made us meet” means that God has qualified us or made us fit for something. This qualification is not earned by our efforts; it is accomplished entirely by God’s grace and power. The Father makes believers fit by regenerating them through the Spirit and planting within them the principles of light, life, grace, and holiness.

The inheritance belongs to the saints in light. It includes forgiveness of sins, reconciliation with God, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, and the hope of eternal life. This inheritance is one undivided portion, shared equally by all the saints, unlike the divided earthly inheritance of Canaan. Those whom the Father has qualified will certainly partake of it; they already share in it through Christ their head, possess the Spirit as a pledge, and will enjoy it fully in the future.

The phrase “saints in light” describes believers who have been sanctified by faith in Christ. They are set apart and live in the light of God’s truth. Light represents spiritual illumination, purity, and the knowledge of God. Believers are called to walk as children of light, living in righteousness and truth.

  • Gratitude: Cultivate a heart of thanksgiving toward God for His work in your life and the blessings you receive.

  • Divine qualification: Rest in the truth that your fitness for the inheritance comes solely through God’s grace, not your own merit.

  • Inheritance: Live as one who already shares in the spiritual blessings and eternal life that come through union with Christ.

  • Living in the light: Walk according to God’s truth, reflecting His character in daily conduct.

Colossians 1:12 reminds us that our standing before God is not a reward for our performance but a gift from the Father. He has qualified us, and He will complete what He began. Our part is to give thanks, to live in the light, and to hold firmly to the hope of the inheritance that is ours in Christ.
