Colossians 1:18

Posted on 18 May at 14:29

“And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.”

Certainly! Here is a Bible study on Colossians 1:18 (KJV) says, "And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence."

Context:It is important to understand the context of the verse by considering the surrounding verses and the letter as a whole. The Apostle Paul wrote the letter to the Colossians while he was in prison, addressing a number of theological issues and false teachings that had arisen in the church at Colossae. In this particular verse, Paul emphasizes the preeminence and supremacy of Christ.

"He is the head of the body, the church":This verse affirms that Jesus Christ is the head of the church, which is His body. Just as the head controls and directs the body, Jesus exercises authority and leadership over the church. The church is not merely an organization but a living organism, intimately connected to its head, Jesus Christ.

"The beginning, the firstborn from the dead":This phrase refers to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. He is described as "the firstborn from the dead," meaning that He is the first to be raised from the dead in a glorified body, never to die again. His resurrection is significant because it demonstrates His victory over sin, death, and the grave, and it guarantees the resurrection of all believers who are united with Him.

"That in all things He might have the preeminence":The ultimate purpose of Christ’s preeminence is to have supremacy in all things. This means that Jesus should have the first place, the highest rank, and the utmost authority in every aspect of our lives, both individually and corporately as the church. He is not merely a part of our lives; He desires to be the center, the focal point, and the ultimate priority.

Application:Understanding the significance of Colossians 1:18 should lead us to respond in several ways:

  • Acknowledging Christ’s headship:As members of the body of Christ, we should recognize and submit to His authority in our lives. We should seek His guidance, follow His teachings, and allow Him to direct our thoughts, actions, and decisions.
  • Embracing His resurrection power:The fact that Christ is the firstborn from the dead assures us of our own resurrection and eternal life. This truth should bring hope, confidence, and joy to our hearts, especially in times of difficulty and trials.
  • Giving Him preeminence in all things:Jesus should be the center of our worship, our relationships, our work, and every area of our lives. We should prioritize Him above all else and seek to honor Him in all that we do.
  • Guarding against false teachings:The letter to the Colossians was written to combat false teachings that undermined the supremacy and sufficiency of Christ. Likewise, we should be vigilant in discerning and rejecting any teachings or ideologies that dilute or distort the truth about Jesus Christ.
