Colossians 1:17

Listen to this article

“And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.”

This verse is part of a larger passage where the apostle Paul is exalting the preeminence of Jesus Christ. Let’s delve deeper into the meaning and significance of this verse.

Jesus is before all things:The verse begins by affirming the eternal existence and preeminence of Jesus Christ. It emphasizes that He existed before all things. This statement speaks to the divinity of Jesus, as it implies that He is not created but rather the eternal Creator Himself (John 1:1-3).

All things consist by Him:The second part of the verse reveals that everything in creation is sustained by Jesus. The term “consist” can be understood as being held together or united in Him. It indicates that Jesus upholds and maintains the order and cohesion of the universe. This concept aligns with the biblical understanding that God, through Christ, sustains and governs all things (Hebrews 1:3).

The verse highlights the cosmic scope of Jesus’ power and authority. He not only created all things but also sustains them, ensuring their proper functioning and coherence. It emphasizes His divine nature and reinforces His sovereignty over the entire universe.

This verse serves as a reminder of the supremacy and centrality of Jesus Christ in the Christian faith. It encourages believers to place their trust in Him, acknowledging that He is not only the Creator but also the sustainer of their lives and the entire cosmos.

Overall, Colossians 1:17 presents a profound theological truth about Jesus Christ, affirming His eternal existence, divine nature, and His role as the sustainer of all creation. It invites believers to place their faith in Him and acknowledge His supremacy in their lives.
